Wedding Plans - Hidden Charges
Posted on | January 27, 2012 |
When you are making your wedding plans the amount of money you will be spending is usually a heated topic. Most couples set a pretty strict budget and know just how much they can spend on each item. As you get prices for the different people and items you need for your wedding you need to be aware that there can be a lot of hidden costs.
The reason you make and set a budget is so you only get what you can afford. To accomplish this you really need to know all the costs that are involved so you won’t be surprised when the total or final bill comes in. The best way I can explain what I am talking about is with an example. Say you have spoke with someone at the place where you want to hold your reception. You have gone over figures and they gave you a written itemized list so you can see what each thing you have picked will cost.
One of the lines says service charge. Do you know what that is? Many people assume that it is the tip, but that is usually not correct. It can refer to different things, depending on who is charging it. In the scenario we are discussing here, it is a charge for the wait staff. Instead of the reception hall paying them out of the money they have charged you per plate, they charge you an additional fee to pay them.
This accomplishes two things for the hall. They make more money, and have done it in a way that you don’t even realize you are paying more per plate then you originally thought. You won’t know you are going to have to pay the gratuity, that is now an additional charge you weren’t expecting, it is too late. You will have to come up with the money.
Don’t be afraid to ask point blank what every fee is for and if their will be additional fees or gratuities that are mandatory at the end. You need to protect yourself and get everything in writing. You must always ask about gratuities as well. My sister in law learned that the hard way. I’ll tell you all about it in my next post.
