Wedding on a Budget

Posted on | August 23, 2010 |

Let’s just get it out in the open right away.  While you have all these great ideas of what you want for your wedding, the reality is that everything costs money.  Lots and lots of money.  If you can afford it great, it will be much easier for you to plan your wedding.  Unfortunately for most of us, money is an object.  It is a big huge object that needs to be addressed right away so you don’t start planning unrealistically. For many of you planning your wedding is the most significant and monumental occasion of your life so far.  You want it to be special and spectacular and something you will remember for the rest of your life.  Believe me you will.  Cutting back and spending your money wisely will not take away from the meaning of your wedding day or the memories.

First you need to figure out who will be contributing to the payment of the wedding and what the significance of the contributions will be.  Will any parents be chipping in money to help you pay for the wedding?  If they are, what do they expect in return?  While many parents are happy to just give money and stand aside, others expect that paying for or contributing to your wedding gives them a say in what you do.  Don’t ignore this possibility, it will just lead to problems later on.  Talk openly and honestly right from the beginning so you don’t end up in your parents/in-laws wedding instead of your own.

Make a realistic list of what you can afford and disperse an amount for each category.  If your budget is $25,000 you can’t pick a reception hall that charges $125 per person when your guest list is 200.  If you are open to different ideas you will always be able to find something that fits your needs and budget.

Here are some things that you need to consider for your budget.  There are lots more items you can add so remember these are just some suggestions to get you started.

Invitations - Invitations and postage as well as save the date cards and thank yous.
